Past Training/Race Reports

August 16 2006Great Glen 24 Hour Mt Bike RaceIn preparation for the Adirondack 540 (RAMM qualifier) I decided to race in the Great Glen 24 Hour Mt Bike Race as a solo racer. For those of you not familiar with this race format, the idea is to complete as many laps of the race course as you can in a 24 hour period. The rider with the most laps wins.I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to practice sleep deprivation, suffering, and falling off my bike. As it turns out, it was also a great...

The Adirondack 540

Here are some random thoughts about the race/my training On September 15th and 16th I raced in the Adirondack 540, a 544 mile bike race. My goal was to qualify to participate in the Race Across America (RAAM) in June 2007. I not only qualified for RAAM, I won the race, completing the course in 32 hours 16 minutes, beating the existing...

Play Time is Over

Well play time is over. Since qualifying for RAAM, I have used the last month to taper and recover. The biggest training week this month was 9 ½ hours. It really seems like a vacation compared to the ramp up to the Great Glean 24 Hour Mountain Bike Race and the Adirondack 540, which included 20 – 30 hour weeks. This Sunday, October 15th it all starts again. I have put together a periodized training program, designed to peak in 34 weeks, just in time for the Race Across America on June 10th,...

The Power of Beans

It feels good to be back to training. Going an entire month without a ride over 50 miles left me feeling a bit jittery. I had to keep reminding myself that it was a time to recover and rejuvenate, and in the long run it would make me stronger.About the title, in addition to starting my training last week, I also met with Hilary Warner MPH, RD, LD of Nutrition Works! LLC. All the aspects of my training have been very deliberate except my diet. Hilary is helping me put together a nutrition...

Extreme Week

This has been a week of extremes. At the beginning of the week, I was in Phoenix, Arizona for a conference. Where I had the opportunity to go mountain biking, I also rented a road bike so I could keep up with training. My training week started on Sunday with a road ride, with two other Commonwealth reps, Charlie Hoffmann and Jim Butler (I...

Return to Gonzo’s Pass

Last week was about riding in the rain. Speed bursts in the rain, hill work in the rain, and recovery rides in the rain and I was prepared to spend 7 hours riding in the rain on Friday. When I went to bed Thursday night they were predicting showers for Friday morning. I had a long ride planned and I was going to do it, regardless of the weather.I woke up Friday morning and was pleasantly surprised to find that the storm had moved out quicker than expected and now the day looked dry and more...

Just Call Me Sisyphus

Only 6 months until RAAM (5 months to train and 1 month to taper.) Training is going well; I am right on schedule and feeling strong. Although winter has not even started, June 10th is just around the corner.I officially started training for RAAM 07 on October 15 th. Below is a chart showing my mileage for each of the past 7 weeks. (This pic is a little hard to read so here are the numbers: week 1- 205.7, week 2-234.8, week 3-260.9, week 4-191.5, week 5-278.3, week 6-300.3, week 7-317.9)...

Return of Pinky and Chief

Well it has been a while since I updated my blog. So I thought I had better take a minute and let you know how things are going. So here are a few of the highlights and lowlights from the last month:Dave Wentworth (aka Pinky) and Terry Roach (aka Chief) were in town over the Christmas holiday. I was able to get together with both of them and take a couple of rides before Terry headed back to Texas and Dave returns to California. It was just like old times. (Ask me sometime about the jackass...

Last Road Ride of the Year

I haven’t blogged for nearly a month and now two blogs in less than a week. I thought you might enjoy my last road ride of 2006I had two long rides on my RAAM training schedule this weekend, 11 hours on Friday and 7 hours on Saturday. I was really hoping to get 300 miles between the two days, but Mother Nature had other plans. To be more specific – Winter.
